The project housed the then recently formed Co-operative Research Centre for Waste Management and Pollution Control and was done in conjunction with the nearby Institute of Environmental Studies. While maintaining the operational usage of the University’s industrial Civil Engineering laboratories, the project involved the complete transformation of the building and the addition of a new mezzanine level to house the faculty’s new Research Centres. As with the Institute of Environmental Studies, a new public interface shopfront was created to give identity to the Centre’s ground breaking research. New engaging entries, reception and administration accommodation were added to give the centre a contemporary image, yet permitting the continuing use of the Civil Engineering research laboratories below. The elevated site was subject to strong western afternoon sun, and the operable sun screening elements strongly influenced the building’s expression.
